What Should You Arrange Before Naming A Guardian For Your Child?

Your child is a year old and the guardian question has been sitting in the back of your mind for months, probably longer. Nobody enjoys this one. Still, there’s a practical side to it that goes well past choosing the most loved relative, because you’re really making two choices: who raises the child, and who looks after the money while that happens.

Who Should Raise Your Child If Something Happens To You?

Set the sentimental shortlist aside and ask about fit. Where do they live, and are you happy picturing your child growing up in that city? Is the person healthy and settled enough to take on 17 years of school runs and fevers? Would your child have to change schools, lose friends, perhaps move countries? A favorite aunt who travels half the year might be the warmest person you know and still a tough day-to-day pick.

The people around them count too. A guardian’s spouse, their own kids and their bank balance shape your child’s days nearly as much as the guardian. Yes, weighing all this feels strange. Nobody reads your list but you.

Does The Guardian Also Need To Handle The Money?

Often it works better if they don’t. Plenty of wonderful parents get flustered by large sums, and a big payout landing in a household that’s already stretched can do harm. Many families name one person for the child and another (sometimes a professional) for the funds, with clear instructions on what gets paid out and when.

Go too far the other way and it gets annoying, though. A guardian who has to ask permission for every school fee will get tired of it fast. What helps most is agreeing beforehand what a normal year costs, and how the guardian claims it.

How Much Would Raising Your Child Cost?

Here’s where numbers help. Let’s say the first year costs ₹4 lakh and costs climb 6% a year (an assumption, plug in your own). Add up 17 years and you arrive at about ₹1.13 crore. It looks huge because it is.

A smarter question is how much you’d need to put aside today, since money in hand now is worth more than money promised later. At an assumed 7% return, that comes to about ₹59 lakh. If your savings and existing cover add up to ₹19 lakh, you’re ₹40 lakh short.

Some parents also look into life insurance for children. For most households the earning parent’s cover comes first, since that income is what the child depends on, and a child’s own policy is an extra question.

What Will A Will Do, And What Can’t It Do?

A will is the place to write down who you’d like as guardian. It states your wishes, and in many cases that carries real weight, though it doesn’t settle everything by itself. A court often has the final say, looking at what’s best for the child, and the rules vary with personal law and with where you live. They also change over time. Take the draft to a family lawyer and have them check it against whatever applies to you.

Do that, don’t skip it. A will with sloppy wording, or one nobody can find, does very little when the day comes.

How Do You Fill A ₹40 Lakh Gap?

There’s rarely one answer. Term cover on your own life tends to be the cheapest route to a big sum over a fixed stretch, and 17 years is exactly that kind of stretch. Saving by hand also helps, though it needs years to pile up and could fall short if the worst comes early. A money saving plan pays out on dates fixed in advance, which some families like for school fees. Whether any of these suits you comes down to what the brochure promises, and that’s where the final answer lives.

What Should You Tell The Person You Name?

Talk to them before you write their name down. Springing seventeen years of responsibility on someone is unfair to them, and rough on your child. Tell them where the papers are kept, who your lawyer and tax advisor are, what policies exist and how a claim is made.

Add a short note on how you’d like your child raised, covering school, religion, language, whatever matters to you. It generally isn’t binding, but a guardian will be glad to have it.

Who Should Not Rely On A Will Alone?

A will by itself may not cut it when the family is complicated: a second marriage, children from an earlier relationship, a relative who may well object to your pick. Get legal advice early and keep a record of why you chose who you did. The same goes for parents who live abroad, since the rules differ between countries, and for anyone with property or a business, where the money side needs a structure of its own.

What Should You Do This Month?

Write two names on a page, one for the child and one for the money. Call both. Work out your own version of the 17-year bill and see how big the gap is. Book an hour with a lawyer to get the will in order. Then look at it again every few years, and any time someone’s health or circumstances change. It’s not a pleasant job. It is one of the kinder things you can do for your child, and once it’s done you’ll sleep a little easier. Keep the papers where two people know to look, and tell your guardian where.
